An exploration of the potential of interpretation and definition - in this case of terms such as « grindcore » or « skate punk » - occurs when the individual accepts to reflect the entirety of the possible meaning of labels and designations back to them. « HELMUT VUTUC LAMPSHADE (TRULY GRINDCORE) » occurs when the banal act of grinding an electric guitar with a skateboard is performed, with as much independence as possible from norms, codes and considerations to pollute the literal aspect of the act.
That includes the notions of instrumental form and technique, but also of preparation and mistake, every performance being improvisational to the situational with no chance given to practice or rehearsal. The self-assembled tool itself is only the visible tip of an iceberg of power meant to emerge from the deepest within, tracing back to natural cores as Vutuc, on the ground, is connected to the Earth, as though the sudden vessel of organic sound that is normally muted by the status quo, and now liberated by a rare combination of physics.
It is a doubt of, and a scratch on what really are appellatives - such as what is primitive, or raw - and a search of their full actual potential beyond all varnish. It also is an experience with placing the individual in a position of vulnerability, exposing them as but a sensitive channel only echoing its noise back into the cosmos, as the price for defying societal conventions.
The performance is also based on movement, from the dialog in between acoustic and amplified artefacts to the subsequent pulsating reverberations and wave-like generation of layers.
